Closing the doors …
After many years of actively running Great Dane Rescue NE Fla (GDR NE Fla), a decision was reached in late 2007 that more family time was needed and that closing the rescue was necessary. One of the main factors in opting to dissolve the rescue versus simply limiting intakes was that ‘scaling back’ had been attempted for several years, without success. For those that know how much we care about Great Danes, it was a very difficult decision. HOWEVER, it is extremely important to know that we were very clear in our commitment to all of the Great Danes we had placed previously. We have been and always will be available to take back any of the Great Danes we re-homed. We also decided that even though we would not take in new cases, we would be a passive resource for anyone interested in the breed. Additionally, we continue to list Great Danes needing homes at our Petfinder site (certain guidelines apply). Thank you …
There are literally untold numbers of people who made our rescue efforts possible, including other rescuers, veterinarians, fosters and volunteers, the adopters … ALL allowed scores of Great Danes to find happiness and people who cared. The ‘official’ journey started with Martha Davidson of Asbury Danes (and her family), and my own husband David and daughter Tasi. They knew the joys and the heartaches that accompany rescue work. What we are doing now …
Not long after stepping away from rescue, my husband retired from the Navy and has headed back to college at Embry-Riddle. With rescue not a main priority, my beautiful daughter was able to get more involved in school activities and graduated in 2010. I remain active in our all breed club and Great Dane community, and am a member of the Great Dane Club of America. Though we have lost many of our special Great Dane family members and our elderly Standardbred horse (32yo), we are fortunate to still have pets in our lives. Three cats, a rescue Great Dane that came back to us after an owner passed away, and an unlikely character named Gator that was found wandering and an owner was never located. |
